Who we are

Luminoso Technologies is a leading natural language understanding company that enables clients to rapidly discover value in their unstructured text data.

Luminoso’s artificial intelligence-based software helps companies quickly and accurately understand what their customers are saying.

Language is disorganized, fluid, and full of slang and misspellings - making it difficult to analyze quickly and at scale. We apply natural language understanding to help clients and partners rapidly make sense of their text data without the time or expense of custom-built ontologies.

Insights from data can be applied throughout the enterprise, from streamlining contact center processes to increasing marketing performance and building better customer experiences.

Our multilingual, flexible software can be accessed via the easy-to-use user interface or integrated into an end-to-end platform via the API. It can be deployed in either a standalone Cloud or On Premise solution. Unstructured data can be natively analyzed in 13 languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Arabic. Luminoso is privately held with headquarters in Cambridge, MA, and additional offices in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., London, and Sydney.

What's your typical day like?

While every day is a little bit different, I focus on developing and streamlining Luminoso’s user interface. I work on code, participate in peer programming, and occasionally share awesome memes with the rest of my team.

Why do you like working for Luminoso?

I love the people here! Luminoso is full of talented, quirky people with a good sense of humor. There’s also a great work-life balance and an awesome company culture.

What do you do outside of work?

I run the Boston chapter of the international NeuroTech organization, love to travel (especially to NYC!), and check out new restaurants. I’m also in the process of getting a machine learning technical certification.

What better way to celebrate Spring than with a cookie bakeoff? Everyone brought in their favorite homemade cookies and voted on their favorites. The winners received a Cookie Monster apron or cookie cutter!

What motivates you to come to work each day?

It's all about the people.  The people I work with stimulate me with new ideas and styles of communication.  The partners and clients I meet challenge me to solve real world problems and help their organizations succeed.  It really is invigorating to be in the market with a technology that literally no one else has and be doing things that no one else can.  Then taking that capability and molding it to fit a particular business for a certain outcome makes every day unique and interesting.

What does your typical workday look like?

If there were a "typical" day it would involve a dose of email, a smattering of travel, a few meetings, heaps of planning, and some quiet time for creative thinking on how to approach old problems in a new way.

What do you do when you aren't at Luminoso?

Spend time outside.  Either exploring my newly adopted city of Sydney or the surrounding terrain.  Unplugging is a major priority, so I go backpacking or scuba diving to immerse myself in a completely different environment and connect to the world in a different way.

What motivates you to come to work each day?

The people at Luminoso are incredible. I'm consistently amazed at how well the team works together, challenges one another and is able to have fun all while tackling some pretty impressive technological feats. Bringing this technology to market, and using it to solve really interesting real-world problems is definitely a big part of what gets me excited to come in each day.

What does your typical workday look like?

I'm fortunate to have the luxury of being involved in a wide variety of projects at Luminoso. One day I'll be on-site with customers working on a proof of concept, the next day I could be working with product management to talk about the future of the space, helping design our next PR campaign, or getting my mind blown by any one of our extremely talented founders.

What do you do when you aren't at Luminoso?

I have a 1 year old (Emma) who keeps me pretty busy. She's an amazing little human being, I'm just lucky to be the parent of. Aside from her, I'm very active in general, mostly mountain biking and beach volleyball these days, but I'm always looking for something new to try.

Pair programming

Our developers regularly participate in pair programming, which helps them see how other developers approach the same problem and come up with more creative solutions.

What motivates you to come to work each day?

The people, our shared love of eating, and people's willingness to go along with the flimsiest excuses to stuff our faces with yet more delicious food. (Case in point: a cookie bakeoff to celebrate the Ides of March. Seriously, who else celebrates the Ides of March?) On a more serious note, I also appreciate being challenged - in a good way - with new responsibilities, and a culture that encourages constantly testing new ideas.

What does your typical workday look like?

While of course every day is different, my projects all revolve around creating new content! I manage the company blog, keep our website updated, and work with the Sales and Customer Success teams to write case studies and white papers about how our clients use Luminoso.

What do you do when you aren't at Luminoso?

Run. A lot. And then wake up at the crack of dawn on Saturday mornings and run some more. I also do yoga, read, and cook/bake because running and being constantly hungry go together.

Lunch and learns

What do the science of cocktail-making, probability and statistics, the physics of golf, and ice cream have in common? All of them have been topics of Luminoso lunch and learns! One employee educates the rest of the team about their favorite topic over lunch… or after work, in the case of topics that involve, erm, adult beverages.
